2024-12-20

Recently, the China Institute of Communications (CIC) conducted the selection process for Fellows and Foreign Fellows for the year 2024. Jie Wu, the President of the Cloud Computing Research Institute of China Telecom, was honored with the title of Foreign Fellow of the China Institute of Communications.

Jie Wu is a Distinguished Professor at Temple University in the United States and the Director of the Center for Network Computing. He is also a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS Fellow), a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE Fellow), and a member of the European Academy of Sciences. He has held numerous important positions, including the Chair of the Department of Computer and Information Sciences at Temple University and the Program Director of the National Science Foundation in the United States.

In the realm of academic research, Professor Jie Wu has explored diverse fields such as mobile computing, wireless networks, and cloud computing. He proposed the idea of using the Connected Dominating Set (CDS) as a virtual backbone and applied it to efficient routing and broadcasting in networks. This approach overcame the limitations of relying on global information or global infrastructure to identify effective broadcasting nodes. To date, he has published over 240 papers in IEEE/ACM Transactions, with a total citation count exceeding 50,000. Many of his papers have been cited over 1,500 times individually. He has received more than ten Best Paper Awards at international academic conferences, authored monographs such as "Design of Distributed Systems," and achieved an h-index of 110. He has been selected as one of the top 1,000 computer scientists globally by Research.com (ranked 150th in the world and 97th in the United States). Professor Jie Wu maintains close interactions with the academic community. He has served as the General Chair/Co-Chair of several conferences, including IEEE DCOSS'09, IEEE ICDCS'13, ICPP'16, IEEE CNS'16, WiOpt'21, IEEE IPDPS'23, ACM MobiHoc'23, and IEEE CCGrid'24. He has been invited multiple times to give lectures at top universities and research institutions such as Tsinghua University, Peking University, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He has also received the "CCF Overseas Outstanding Contribution Award" from the China Computer Federation, demonstrating his extensive academic influence both domestically and internationally.

The China Institute of Communications (CIC), established in 1978, is a national-level society registered with the Ministry of Civil Affairs, affiliated with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, and supervised by the China Association for Science and Technology. The society has 54 branches and over 68,000 members. The conferment of the title of Foreign Fellow by the CIC is a renewed recognition of his outstanding contributions, highlighting his exceptional international influence and profound expertise in the field of communications.

In 2024, Professor Jie Wu was invited to serve as the Chief Scientist of China Telecom and the Dean of the Cloud Computing Research Institute. He leads a team dedicated to fundamental theory and cutting-edge technology research in the field of cloud computing, striving to inject new vitality into the exploration of advanced network technologies and the integrated development of industrial practices for China Telecom.
